In keeping with our mission to contribute to the enrichment and preservation of our surroundings through advocacy and outreach, The Knoxville Garden Club is proud to award annual monetary grants to deserving organizations in our community.

***2024 GRANTEE AWARDS ***

Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum

Purchase of plant material, mulch, and services of local landscape company for one year maintenance. This will be used to revitalize the area adjacent to the Martha Ashe Garden along Houston St. Clearing and installation to be done by Garden staff. 

Friends of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park

To help combat the invasive hemlock wooly adelgid for the protection of the threatened, hemlock forests of in Great Smoky National Park.

Old Gray Cemetery

Prune and maintain overgrown or dead branches and stems on the smaller flowering trees on the cemetery property, as well as remove ivy and brush around all trees. The ongoing maintenance will improve the life and health of the over 45 varieties of trees. The cemetery is classified as a Level One Arboretum the only one in downtown Knoxville.

 

University of Tennessee Gardens, Knoxville

To enhance the experience and education of the visitors with the use of a smartphone tour on Engage by Cell which will have maps, plant information, and event details.  GIS services will be required for the mapping and part of the funds will be for a part time Gardens GIS student intern.

Knoxville Museum of Art

To maintain and refresh the landscaping in the museum’s entry plaza and the North and South gardens. This will require removing the existing plant material and soil, bringing in new soil, repairing irrigation, and planting new materials. Sara Pinnell of Hedstrom Design LLC will oversee the project.

 

Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection, Knox County Public Library

Purchase of indoor potted plants and/or arrangements as the season dictates. Placement of plants will include the East Tennessee History Center’s first floor main entrance area to the museum, the second floor Knox County Archives main desk, and all public areas of the third floor of the C.M. McClung Historical Collection.

 

Ijams Nature Center

To help restore the 1,500 square foot bed along the homesite lawn.  Invasive species and prepare the bed for planting during the fall and winter 2024.  Plants will be purchased and installed in the late winter early spring of 2025.

 

Blount Mansion Association

Continued maintenance of gardens, including mowing, weed eating,  and the yearly irrigation work done by Raindrop Landscaping. Funds will also be used for care and upkeep of the fencing and walkways and benches, as well as unforeseen expenses.

 

Trees Knoxville

Purchase trees (1.5-2” caliber trees from local tree farms) to be used in the Canopies for Campus program, to create an urban forest around local schools. Goal is to plant up to a dozen trees on six or more Knox County School campuses.

 

East Tennessee Daffodil Society

To provide funds to purchase daffodil bulbs to give out to youth to encourage participation in the American Daffodil flower shows and to provide an informational brochure for public use.

 

Cancer Support Community of East Tennessee

Purchase of plant materials, soil amendments, mulch, trees, more container garden planters, herbs and vegetables, and outdoor furniture.  This is a continuation of the “See How the Garden Grows,” project which encompasses an outdoor space, container garden space and sculpture garden for program participants to enjoy. Container garden area will be used for herbs and vegetables to be used in nutrition classes.  Funds will also be used for plants around the new sign by the road as well as continued maintenance on existing beds.

The Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum for funds to be used for purchase of plant material, landscaping stones, gravel and cypress mulch to revitalize the Martha Ashe Garden and area around it.  

 

Friends of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park

Friends of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park to support the national park’s efforts to support long-term monitoring of vegetation and soil quality across the park.  

 

Old Gray Cemetery

Old Gray Cemetery to fund pruning and maintenance of overgrown or dead branches and stems on the smaller flowering trees on the cemetery property, as well as remove ivy and brush around all trees.

 

Legacy Parks Foundation

Legacy Parks Foundation to  assist with clean-up efforts, removal of invasive plants and re-introduction of native plants at Collier Preserve.

 

The Knoxville Museum of Art

The Knoxville Museum of Art for funds to upgrade the landscaping in the museum’s entry plaza by replacing the existing plant materials in the planters with native species.  

 

The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection

The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection for the purchase of indoor potted plants and/or arrangements as the season dictates.  

 

The Ijams Nature Center

The Ijams Nature Center for the purchase of tools to assist the Ijams Natural Resource Management team and volunteers in their work to expand and improve efforts to maintain and restore native landscapes.

 

Blount Mansion

Blount Mansion to fund continued maintenance of the gardens as well are for yearly irrigation and care and upkeep of the fencing, walkways and benches as well as unforeseen expenses.

 

Trees Knoxville

Trees Knoxville to use towards the purchase of up to 60 trees to be used in the Canopies for Campus program to create an urban forest around local schools.  

 

Cancer Support Community East Tennessee

Cancer Support Community East Tennessee to use towards the purchase of plant materials, soil amendments, mulch, trees, container garden planters, starter herbs and vegetables, gardening tools, outdoor furniture, installation fees and professional fees to create an outdoor space, container garden space and sculpture garden for program participants to enjoy.

Purpose: Continued maintenance of the gardens at Blount Mansion. Includes care of boxwoods, maintenance of the fence (includes rebuild).

Friends of the Smokies

Purpose: Help support Park’s efforts to protect ash trees. Systemic treatment of ash trees in developed areas to prevent hazard tree danger and treat back country ash.

Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachians

Purpose: Improve garden area at Girl Scout center, label plant material and receive wildlife habitat certification.

Ijams Nature Center

Purpose: Purchase plants and materials to assist the Ijams Natural Resource team and volunteers in their work to expand the Peg Beute Education and Propagation site.

Purpose: Improvements to the Every Child Outdoors (ECO Garden) with installation of an arbor and bench. Vining plants and cold frames in planters to extend growing window during colder months.

Purpose: Ongoing upkeep of two garden areas on north and south sides of Clayton Building. Maintenance costs of planters in three museum locations.

Lakeshore Parks

Purpose: Continued work on the Woodland Marsh Project

Legacy Parks Foundation

Purpose: Continued enhancements within the Urban Wilderness including; clean up, removal of invasive plant species and re-introduction of native plants.

Purpose: Provide fresh seasonal flower arrangements or low light plants for the McClung Historical Collection rooms.

Purpose: To build a circular flower bed to enhance the 14 knockout rose bushes that encircle the fountain at Old Gray.

Purpose: Funds to pay for trees planted at schools in Knoxville and Knox county.

UT Gardens

Purpose: Full or partial funding for a student intern to serve as Kitchen Garden Horticultural Intern and funding for the Two Arcs sculpture for permanent display at UT gardens.

UT Bruner Scholarship

Purpose: Annual contribution to the scholarship endowment.
